Hello Gardening Friends,
Is it August already? Time to use up the rest of that vacation time you’ve been saving! Although it is a perfect time to get away and relax, it is tough on your garden. Of course, planting drought tolerant plants is one idea, but how about those containers and your veggie garden? Most of us have a fellow gardener or neighbor that can help us out. Here are some tips to make life a bit easier:
- Make self-watering units out of 2-liter soda bottles. Poke a couple small holes in the bottle and plant them half way into the ground at the root zone of your plants. Fill with water before you leave.
- Perhaps if you are only going to be gone for a couple days, put your container plantings in a kiddie pool with water in it.
- If you are going to be gone longer than a week, place all your containers in one spot, perhaps near the watering source, and have a friend stop by. A shady spot is ideal in case your friend misses a day!
If you go away every summer for a few weeks, or maybe you live in an area that has a water ban each year, it would be well worth the investment to have T.W.I.G. create a xeriscape design for you. Now is the perfect time to make notes about the various issues in your yard and have T.W.I.G. work on your design this winter. The design will be done just in time to implement in the spring!
Bloomingly Yours,
